Sapper Joe Race Day Information
Congrats on being part of the 2nd Annual Sapper Joe Trail Race!
Here are the FAQs.
Registration
If you are not yet registered, you can still register through Friday, May 28th. There will be no same day registration. You can register by mail or, ideally, at the Wasatch Running Center this week. The best time would be Friday, May 28th from 4-7p.m. at the packet pick-up. For more details, see packet pick-up below.
How to get to Camp Williams
From I-15, coming from the north or the south, take exit 289, the Bangerter Highway exit, and head west to the Redwood Road light. Take a left at the Redwood Road light so you are now heading south again. Camp Williams is at the point of the mountain, roughly 4 or 5 miles from the light. There is a light at Camp Williams. Take a left into the complex and follow the signs to where you should park. YOU MUST SHOW A PICTURE ID TO ENTER THE GUARD. After entering the Guard, travel down the hil. When you get to the end of the road, take a left. There will be designated parking for you. We will be meeting in Building 615 where you can look at maps of the course and relax before the race begins.
Aid Stations
There are 4 aid stations for the 50K course, 3 aid stations for the 30K course, and 1 aid station for the 15K. The first aid station is the same for the 30K and the 50K The final aid station is the same for each course. Water, Hammer Heed, fruit, energy gels, and other snacks will be provided at each aid station. With most trail races, you will check in and out of every aid station by the number you will be given. Even though we know most will, we HIGHLY encourage everyone to carry their own fuel and water, merely using the aid stations as replenishment. We are trying to be as eco-friendly as possible and will not have many paper cups at aid stations so bring your own bottles and fill them up at each aid station. The Guard is providing large water reservoirs at each aid station so there will be plenty of water for everyone. Still, pack your own. There will also be water and other nutrition at the start/finish area for before and after the race.
Drop Bags
At aid station #3 for the 50K and aid station #2 for the 30K, you can have a drop bag. There will be a place designated at the start/finish area before the race begins to leave these items just in case you are wanting something later in the race. Like always, mark with your number, name, and distance you are running so we can keep them straight.
Packet Pick-Up
There will be packet pick-up at the Wasatch Running Center, 8946 South State Street in Sandy, Friday, May 28th, from 4-7p.m. DO NOT COME BEFORE THIS TIME TO PICK UP YOUR PACKET. WE WILL NOT GIVE IT TO YOU. We do not have staff at the store during the day to accommodate people coming in and out all day. We have extra staff from 4-7p.m. which allows us to have packet pick-up at the store and gives you an opportunity to pick up any last minute items. To get to the Wasatch Running Center, take exit 295, the 9000 South exit, and head east towards State Street. The easiest thing to do is to get in the left hand turn lane and flip a U-turn at State Street and take a quick right into the shopping complex. We are located on the south end. You can also pick up your packet the morning of the race, starting at 5:00 a.m., in Building 615. We will be there as early as 4:00 a.m. but encourage most to arrive somewhere around 5:00 a.m. to get ready.
Bathrooms
We will have port-a-potties provided at the start/finish area. There are no facilities on the course. If nature calls, simply do your business to the side of the trail. Do not go wondering off the trail. We remind everyone of where the race is being held. If you see something shiny, DON'T pick it up!!
Pacing
Due to the nature of the course, we will not have pacers on either distance. Because this is a loop course entirely on Camp Williams property, there isn't a good spot for anyone to pick up a pacer.
Cut-Off Time
The race does have a cut-off time of nine (9) hours. We will come up with a time you need to make for the final aid station in order to complete the race on time.
Friends and Family
The race begins and ends on the parade field, a large patch of grass for people to spread out and enjoy the day. We encourage your friends and family to come and watch you finish. THEY WILL NEED A PICTURE ID TO ENTER THE GUARD. It will be a great time to come and hang out and watch people finish. We will have a climbing wall for the kids as well as live music during the middle of the day.
Medical Aid
There will be an EMT at the start/finish area for the duration of the race just in case there is an emergency. We remind everyone of the nature of this race and encourage everyone to stay well hydrated and take care of themselves.
I know some have had to drop out due to injury or scheduling conflict. If you know you are not going to participate, please let me know.
If I have missed anything or have not answered your question, please feel free to email me. Please double-check and make sure I have your correct information and that you are listed under the correct race. I look forward to seeing you this week.
