How to get to Camp Williams: From I-15, coming from the north or the south, take exit 289, the Bangerter Highway exit, and head west to the Redwood Road light. Take a left at the Redwood Road light so you are now heading south again. Camp Williams is at the point of the mountain, roughly 4 or 5 miles from the light. There is a light at Camp Williams. Take a left into the complex and follow the signs to where you should park. YOU MUST SHOW A PICTURE ID TO ENTER THE GUARD. After entering the Guard, travel down the hill. When you get to the end of the road, take a left. There will be designated parking for you. We will be meeting in Building 615 where you can look at maps of the course and relax before the race begins.
Packet Pick-Up: There will be packet pick-up at the Wasatch Running Center, 8946 South State Street in Sandy on August 15th from 4-8 p.m. To get to the Wasatch Running Center, take exit 295, the 9000 South exit, and head east towards State Street. The easiest thing to do is to get in the left hand turn lane and flip a U-turn at State Street and take a quick right into the shopping complex. We are located on the south end. You can also pick up your packet the morning of the race, starting at 4:00 a.m., in Building 615. We will be there as early as 3:30 a.m. but encourage most to arrive somewhere around 4:30 a.m. to get ready.
Course: The entire course will be on Camp Williams property. Race day will be the only time that the course will be open for us to run on. The course will begin on the east side of Redwood Road, near the Camp Williams parade field, then cross under Redwood Road, and enter the Camp Williams Ranges on the west side of the road. The race will then consist of single track and groomed dirt road. Both the 30K and 50K races will follow the same route for the first 5.7 miles. At this point, the 50K will follow a larger loop, while the 30K will take a smaller loop and will meet up once more to run the last 5.8 miles along the same course back to the finish. Both races will finish on the Camp Williams parade field. The overall altitude gain in the 50K is approximately 5500 feet. The gain in the 30K is approximately 3700 feet. Both races have been laid out by trail runners, and will expose the participants to the territory not typically accessible to non-military individuals. Both courses are challenging and interesting, providing great views of both the Salt Lake and Utah valleys. There will be a time cutoff of nine (9) hours to complete the race. We also offer a "generous" 15K race that will be fun, yet challenging. It will follow the same course as the other races but four miles in, it will head north across Cedar Point to Beef Hollow, where the final aid station on the course is located. It will then follow the same route back to the finish as the other races follow. We have created the 15K race for those who are new to trail running to come out and experience the joy of trail running and get a chance to run on Camp Williams property.
Aid Stations: The great thing about the aid stations is that they are all run by the Guard. Expect superb treatment as you come through. This is one of the best things about the race, an opportunity to work so closely with the wonderful men and women of our National Guard. There will be one aid station for the 15K, three aid stations for the 30K, and four aid stations for the 50K which will offer the usual trail race goodies: GU, watermelon, bananas, water, sports drink, gels, pretzels, etc. The first aid station is the same for the 30K and the 50K The final aid station is the same for each course. Water, Hammer Heed, fruit, energy gels, and other snacks will be provided at each aid station. With most trail races, you will check in and out of every aid station by the number you will be given. Even though we know most will, we HIGHLY encourage everyone to carry their own fuel and water, merely using the aid stations as replenishment. We are trying to be as eco-friendly as possible and will not have many paper cups at aid stations so bring your own bottles and fill them up at each aid station. The Guard is providing large water reservoirs at each aid station so there will be plenty of water for everyone. Still, pack your own. There will also be water and other nutrition at the start/finish area for before and after the race.
Drop Bags: At aid station #3 for the 50K and aid station #2 for the 30K, you can have a drop bag. There will be a place designated at the start/finish area before the race begins to leave these items just in case you are wanting something later in the race. Like always, mark with your number, name, and distance you are running so we can keep them straight.
Bathrooms: We will have port-a-potties provided at the start/finish area. There are no facilities on the course. If nature calls, simply do your business to the side of the trail. Do not go wondering off the trail. We remind everyone of where the race is being held. If you see something shiny, DON'T pick it up!!
Pacing: Due to the nature of the course, we will not have pacers on any distance. Because this is a loop course entirely on Camp Williams property, there isn't a good spot for anyone to pick up a pacer.
Cut-Off Time: The race does have a cut-off time of nine (9) hours. We will come up with a time you need to make for the final aid station in order to complete the race on time.
Friends and Family: The race begins and ends on the parade field, a large patch of grass for people to spread out and enjoy the day. We encourage your friends and family to come and watch you finish. THEY WILL NEED A PICTURE ID TO ENTER THE GUARD. It will be a great time to come and hang out and watch people finish. We will have a climbing wall for the kids as well as live music during the middle of the day.
Medical Aid: There will be an EMT at the start/finish area and at the final aid station for the duration of the race just in case there is an emergency. We remind everyone of the nature of this race and encourage everyone to stay well hydrated and take care of themselves.
Awards: Overall male and female winner for each distance. Finishers medals and t-shirts for all competitors.
